Celebrating Freedom of This World and the Next

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, I find myself reflecting on the many blessings of residing in a country like the United States of America. Our nation’s very existence was precipitated by the belief of a group of brave men and women that every person deserves the right to worship God freely.

Freedom is defined as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” Having the ability to freely express and live out our religious beliefs is a luxury not afforded in every country. As a Christian, I can’t help but to think of the people who’ve been persecuted and even put to death for their faith for thousands of years. While many Christians are feeling the clash of their beliefs against the changing morals of culture, we have not yet suffered the persecution so many of our brothers and sisters are enduring this very moment. I know I will say an extra prayer of gratitude as I drive to church on July 4.

While the freedom we enjoy in the United States is a precious gift, it is nothing compared to the freedom we can experience in Christ, which did not come without a great cost. Jesus, the Son of God, was mocked, beaten and crucified. He suffered greatly so that those who follow him can live freely for all eternity.

John 8:36 NIV reads, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Being a follower of Christ brings about the ultimate freedom. In Christ, we are unbound from all sin. No bondage, guilt, shame or fear can run our lives because through Christ we are renewed and forgiven. Unlike our earthly freedoms, our eternal freedom in Christ is permanent. No government or individual can take it away.

Romans 8:1 NIV says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Think about those words, “no condemnation.” That is a radical promise. By placing your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, there is nothing you could do that would make God halt his affection. With Jesus, sin has no power and there is no authority that can hinder the freedom of eternal life in heaven promised to us as believers. We are all imperfect people that make mistakes, and the Evil One will try to trap you into believing you are a slave to your past sins and you can’t possibly be saved- but that is a lie, and you can be free forever in Jesus.

If you are feeling stuck, frustrated or lost, I encourage you to hold tight to the promise that by placing your faith in Jesus Christ, full, eternal, never-changing freedom is possible. If I can help answer any of your questions or help you learn how to find this eternal freedom, please send me an email to larry@larryodonnell.com and I will follow up with you.
