Find Contentment in The Lord’s Goodness – Part 2

“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” Philippians 4:11 (ESV)

As I continue to process the source of true contentment, I’m reminded of the Apostle Paul. For much of Paul’s ministry, he was writing to the early church from prison while shackled in chains. To say the least, he was entrenched in terrible circumstances, and yet, he never once complained. He was content in the Lord—overflowing in gratitude—no matter his circumstance.

There’s so much for us to learn from this. Paul was content in his lowly position as an imprisoned missionary. He was content in the Lord. He was joyful in seeing the church thrive even though he could not physically be there. This could only be the joy and fulfillment that come from the Holy Spirit.

In all my years on this earth, I’ve noticed that truly content people can handle any difficult situation with peace. Whatever is thrown their way, they remain thankful and secure in the Lord. Like Paul, when the tougher waves of life hit them, they are content and at peace because they know God is sovereign and in control.

Paul sought the Lord’s heart in his ministry. Rather than being discouraged, asking God “why” or giving up—Paul remained hopeful and asked God “what.”

Rather than asking God “why” amid challenges, let us re-posture our hearts to humbly ask God “what.” “Lord, what do you want me to do here? What are you trying to teach me?”

When we do this, we’re setting ourselves up for abiding victories.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)

The Secret

“The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” Psalm 23:1 (NCV)

Ultimately, the secret to contentment is abiding in the Lord and worshipping Him for all He’s done. If the cross was all He ever did for you—in your whole life—it would be enough.

I have found the more I reflect on the Lord’s goodness—thanking Him with a genuine heart—for all the little things, the more I have come to appreciate His blessings in the monumental things.

When we truly fathom that all good things are gifts from Jesus—big and small—we are compelled to satisfaction, falling at His feet in humble worship and surrender, thanking Him for all He has done.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
