Resting in the Lord’s Sovereignty

Recently, I’ve been pondering the Lord’s sovereignty.

While the word ‘sovereign’ can feel overwhelming or confusing, take rest in the fact that this concept is probably something none of us will ever fully comprehend on this side of heaven.

Moreover, what if the sovereignty of the Lord was actually meant to bring us unexplainable comfort and peace beyond anything we’ve ever known?

Over the years, as I’ve spent more and more time in the presence of the Father, I’ve come to love the Lord on deeper levels because of His sovereignty. It’s certainly an important piece of His character that reveals to His children just how much He loves us and cares for us.

While we live in an ever-changing world with ever-changing individuals, circumstances and emotions around us—we are held in the hands of a never-changing and sovereign God, who is in control of everything.

When times are difficult, when things don’t make sense, when we are left brokenhearted, or feel lost and powerless of things happening around us, it is always comforting to know that we as Christians are seen by our God who deeply cares for us, weeps with us, intercedes for us, has our best interests at heart and is working together all things for good by the power of His mighty nature and Holy Spirit.

This is the beauty of the omnipotence of God.

Despite understanding that He is in control, sometimes the hardships of life get us down, leaving us feeling hopeless. Our minds might tell us that the Lord is sovereign, but our hearts are feeling less hopeful than we want to feel.

But I urge you: Continue on. Run the race with excellence, and trust in the Lord’s sovereignty.

Think of Job. He felt so hopeless he wanted to die. But he continued to remind himself of the Lord’s goodness and power. He held onto the knowledge of God’s sovereignty and continued to praise God in all of it.

This is true worship, that we might praise the Lord in all circumstances—regardless of how we feel.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Even when our hearts and minds are sending mixed messages, and Satan and his army are causing our flesh to lose hope and trust in the Lord, we can trust that the Lord is sovereign, leaning on scripture that tells us about the depths of His character:

  • He will draw near to us when we draw near to Him. (James 4:8)

  • He is working all things together for our good. (Romans 8:28)

  • He is an ever-present help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

  • His Word never returns void. (Isaiah 55:11)

  • He sees you—even when no one else does. (Jeremiah 12:3)

  • He is GOOD and His love for us endures forever. (Psalm 100:5)

  • He intercedes for us. (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25)

  • He is an advocate for us. (1 John 2:1)

We can rest in the Lord’s all-powerful nature because we can give Him our overwhelming grievances, burdens, strongholds, guilt, and worries, knowing He has our lives in His hands.

We don’t have to worry about making mistakes according to His will because He is more sovereign than our mistakes. We can take comfort in the fact that we don’t have to “figure out” God’s will. We don’t need to control our own lives, keeping everything perfect from the outside, wrapped in a pretty bow.

Rather, we are called into a deeper personal relationship with Jesus, surrendering control to Him, allowing the Lord to navigate our lives in His all-powerful sovereignty. We are called to be obedient to His commands and to honor Him in all we do. We are called to love Jesus and love others. This is our part. Yet, He gives us the will and the way to do His will.

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” Philippians 2:13

Even in our sin, God sees us and loves us unconditionally. That’s the power of His love.

He is the redeemer of all things redeemed. In this, we can abide.

In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:11-12

What an amazing, awesome, loving, and sovereign God we have! Let us praise Him and give Him thanks!
