Scripture to Pray for Your Grandchildren

I recently got promoted to “Grandpa” when my son and his bride welcomed their first child into the world a few months ago -- Lawrence Reeves O’Donnell. Let me tell you, my grandson is the most beautiful, perfect, joyful, awe-inspiring child to ever grace the planet (other than Jesus). This is a fact – and of course I’m not biased at all!

Being a grandparent is such a gift, and I am so grateful to be a part of his life for however long the Lord allows me to remain on earth. I hope my impact on his life is meaningful, that I point him to Jesus, and that even after I’ve gone to Heaven, he will think back to my words and guidance, and reflect on how he saw Jesus working in and through me to positively impact his life and his eternity.

Did you know that as grandparents, we can continue making a tangible difference in our grandchildren’s lives even after we’ve left this world? Our prayers outlive us! Even after we are no longer here physically, the time we’ve spent in intercession will continue to make a difference. How precious for our grandchildren to be able to see our prayers come to fruition in their lives even after we’re gone!

If you are in the grandparents’ club, here are some Scriptures to pray over your grandchildren!

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 36:26

There is nothing more important to pray over your grandchildren than their salvation. Pray that they will have a soft heart toward the Lord and ears to hear when He calls them out of darkness and into His marvelous light.

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” - Luke 2:52

While this verse is speaking about Jesus as He grew up in His childhood, it is a wonderful prayer to pray for our grandchildren. We want them to become more and more like Jesus, which includes growing in wisdom and stature, with focus on God, and viewed with integrity by man!

So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith -- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. – Ephesians 3:17-19

Beyond praying for their salvation, pray for your grandchildren to be rooted in God’s love – that they will find their meaning, purpose, and identity only in Him!

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him; bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. – Colossians 1:9-10

Our grandchildren will grow up in a day when it will be hard to follow Christ. People will be waiting to deceive them at every turn. Pray that God will grant them supernatural wisdom and discernment to know the path God wants them to walk in, and that they will grow to maturity in their personal relationship with the Lord.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6

Pray that the Holy Spirit can work in and through us to help teach our grandchildren about Jesus so that they can have a solid foundation in the Lord to give them strength to trust Him throughout their lives, no matter what difficulties they may face.

For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. – Psalm 91:11

Pray that God will protect and guide your grandchildren, and that His holy angels will watch over them and keep them safe.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. – Numbers 6:24-26

Pray that God extends His grace, blessings, and peace upon your grandchildren.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23

Pray that the Lord will protect your little grandchildren’s hearts and minds. Pray that their innocence would be preserved and that they not be misled and deceived by their teachers, friends, and others. Pray that as they become adults they would set their hearts toward Christ in everything they do.

Being a grandparent is a tremendous blessing, and with that blessing comes tremendous responsibility. Allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through you to be a positive source of influence in their lives and to help them put their trust in the Lord at the appropriate time. And be sure you lift your grandchildren up before the Lord in your prayers each and every day! These verses can serve as a starting point for your prayers, and you can and should personalize them and speak from your heart to the Lord as you pray for your grandchildren.
