If you’ve been following this blog, you’ve heard me talk about the importance of having a mentor. I credit the mentors in my life with so much of my success as a businessman, husband and father, and I’ve had the honor of mentoring many wonderful young professionals as well. We all grow and learn each day, and having someone who can speak into an area of your life and provide sound guidance contributes to refining one’s character.

A mentor is someone to help guide you and coach you. Someone to share your struggles with you and to give you guidance and support, to help you deliver on your responsibilities to others. The best mentors have more experience and have walked through many trials that allow them to provide insight and a different perspective you may not yet have. They have the ability to ask the right questions that help you discern the right solution or approach, rather than just giving you their answer.

While finding an earthly mentor is important, it’s a great encouragement that Christians have the ultimate mentor with them at all times! All believers have the Holy Spirit living within us, providing wisdom and direction. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us and makes our prayers sound beautiful to God. He helps us discern God’s will for our lives.

Romans 8:26-28 reads, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Being a leader can often feel lonely, but as Christians, we are never alone because Jesus is always with us. There have been various points in my life, from difficult leadership decisions to my daughter’s injury and ensuing disability, when I relied on the Holy Spirit and know I would not have survived without His presence. At my darkest points, I was able to realize the Holy Spirit is living within me and remember God told me it is about His plan, not my plan, so I need to trust in Him.

When I remember that the Holy Spirit lives inside me at all times to guide me, I can tap into His power to transform my disposition from being uptight to being at peace. Access the Holy Spirit in prayer and be comforted that you have a mentor constantly alongside you and dive into fully trusting the plan God has for your life and your leadership role.
