What is the Gospel?

In churches, we talk a lot about the importance of the Gospel, and it is of paramount significance. The Gospel, or “Good News,” is a true story we need to treasure and share with the world! However, when we think of the Gospel, we often think of just the first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, which tell us of Jesus’ time on earth.

However, the more I study the Bible, the more I realize that it’s all the Gospel! The whole book from Genesis to Revelation is the Good News! It’s the story of God’s immense love for humankind and the lengths He undertakes to rescue us from our sin.

When you start viewing the Bible as one epic narrative, your eyes are opened to how everything points to Jesus! The Old Testament is not just a collection of tales, laws, and the history of Israel, it’s a picture of the coming Messiah and a demonstration of our desperate need for a Savior.

If you are new to Bible study or just are feeling stagnant in your relationship with the Word, I encourage you to listen to my podcast episode “The Grand Narrative of the Bible.” In an hour and half, I will take you through the Bible’s overarching narrative from Genesis to Revelation, so you can better understand each book, chapter, and verse.

There is no endeavor more valuable than the study of God’s Word. Once you’ve got the big picture, pick any book of the Bible, and dig in! Each week, I release a podcast Bible study to help you get started. We’ve covered a lot of the Bible so far, and you can jump in anywhere you want. Here’s a quick guide to get you started. These are listed in the order we covered them in our live Bible Study, but you can start anywhere you’d like!

I am aware of several Bible Study groups that get together weekly, and simply read a chapter that we have already recorded in advance of their meeting, gather together and play the recording, and then have their own discussion about the text. So put your own Bible Study group together (or do it weekly with your spouse), and I will make it easy for you to go through the Bible, verse by verse. Digging into the revelations that God has given to us in His Word is a great catalyst to help you grow in your personal relationship with Him. And if you ever have a question, reach out to me at larry@larryodonnell.com and I will help you find answers to your questions.
