The Value of Reading
A few weeks ago on my blog, I wrote about the important topic of why you should never stop learning. There is a great value that comes with continually gaining experiences and knowledge that stretch you and teach new lessons.
One of the best ways to learn is through reading. Reading is a wonderful way for us to expand our knowledge, learn about others and ourselves, explore new places, go on adventures without ever leaving where we are and even make discoveries.
It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it. – Oscar Wilde
Oftentimes, I find people develop adversity to reading because of years spent in school being forced to study novels that may not have been of interest. But reading something you enjoy can open up a world of possibilities. If you are not someone who regularly picks up a book, I encourage you to take the first step by finding what types of books interest you. Try a variety and maybe a few genres or topics outside of your comfort zone. When you find stories that captivate your attention and pique your curiosity it can change the game.
Developing a habit of reading is key in understanding its value and also reaping the benefits from it. Once a routine is built, enjoyment can increase and just how important reading is will be realized. It seems that some people think it is boring or difficult but as I often say, you must challenge yourself and face situations, no matter how small, that create opportunities for growth and learning. Reading is one of those things - just think of the vast amount of stories that are documented in books that can be explored when you decide to open one.
Reading is good for your mind. It has the ability to strengthen memory, improve vocabulary, reduce stress, help you focus and expand your knowledge. A restful activity, reading allows you to slow down, relax and think. It even helps your writing skills as you take in and observe words. Clearly, there is great value for your brain found in reading. Therefore, why would you choose to not engage in a hobby that improves your health, and then in turn benefits your overall well-being?
I have gained much knowledge, insight and understanding through reading books about a variety of topics including leadership, fatherhood, marriage, theology and biblical principles. I have also improved my skills in some of my favorite hobbies like sailing, surfing, water skiing and golfing through reading. I even learned how to record and edit my weekly podcast by opening a book. There is so much we can learn from the experiences and knowledge of others when we engage in reading. And now, books are commonly available in ebook and audiobook formats which helps you dive in when you are on the go.
The ability to read is a gift, often taken for granted, that should be cherished. Pick up a book and start reading today. If you are looking for a recommendation, don’t forget about my book “Waste Management: 5 Steps to Clean Up the Mess and Lead With Purpose.” Also available in ebook and audiobook formats on Amazon.
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. – Dr. Seuss
